Codes, Conventions and Categories of Short Films

Short Films don’t carry any specific codes and conventions this is because they are experimental; they give a director the chance to develop a certain type of style that’s individual to them.

Film Categories

Even if short films don't have codes and conventions they tend to if into certain categories below I'll give a brief description of what they are.

Animated; this type shorts can be either drawn or computer generated and dates back to even before the start of film. Arthur Melbourne Cooper made the first animated film, 'Matches, An Appeal' this was a public appeal during the Boer War, this also reflects on shorts being used for activism and a way of expressing views on current affairs.

The video above shows Cooper's work the story is of a young boy who's toys come to life, Cooper uses stop frame on a dream sequence that the boy has. This is an example of the early developments of animation

Documentary; this is the attempt to document reality, capturing unscripted emotions and stories that reflect a people.

Experimental; reefers to Avant-garde films that have also made an influence on the way that many of the music videos being produced today are made.

Live action short; this is work that acted out and not animated. Having actors telling a story.

Soundie; this is the early verson of music videos.

Sponsored; relating to a particular time when something is happening, this can be connected to Coopers animation on the Boer War or Scorsese 'The Big Shave' thats known to reflect the Vietnam war.

Travelogue; these are travel documentaries, they make it possible for people to gain knowledge about places that otherwise would be unknown to them.
